Your roof also does a good job of keeping light out.  If you want to brighten up a dark room maybe a skylight or sun-tunnel is right for your home.  Jim can help you decide if installing a skylight/skylights or sun-tunnels will work in your home.  Jim recommends Velux  Skylights  which are available in many size and style options.

Do you have water where you don't want it, outside your house?  Your roof is redirecting all the water that falls on it.  If it is not sending it where you want it to go you may want to consider installing rain diverters and/or gutters.  Jim can discuss with you your options for keeping yourself, your guests, and your yard dryer.

JIM'S ROOFING & HOME IMPROVEMENT can also add copper valleys, cupolas, weathervanes and other decorative items to really set your house apart from the others.

Ice Back Up

Ice back up is a solution where the snow and ice on your roof has created an ice dam.  The heat you use to keep your house warm melts some of thesnow on the roof.  This melt water tries to roll down the roof but is blocked by the ice dam.  This causes the water to back up under the shingles and into your home.  Toprevent leakes caused by ice back up, Jim recommends Ice and Water Shield is a self adhesive rubberized rolled product that is applied under your shingles to seal your roof.

Ice Shield may not always solve your ice back up issues.  Ice shield does not prevent water from penetrating your shingles it just keeps it from penetrating the ice shield.  If you only have ice shield at the bottom of your roof, and if water backs up further than the ice shield, you can still experience leaking.  This can happen if it is a bad winter, and it can be made worse by removing the snow only at the bottom of the roof with a snow rake.   This can cause the ice dam to start above the ice shield and allow the water to enter the roof  where there is no ice shield.  Most roofers place ice shield only on the lowest three feet of the roof. Jim may recommend that you install ice shield all the way up the roof or at least additionally in the vunberable spots such as around valleys, dormers, and walls.

To prevent ice back up, ice dams must not be allowed to form on your roof.  Ice dams can be pervented by installing electric roof De-Icing Cables  in your vunerable areas.  De-icing cables are electric heated wires that when installed properly melt paths in the ice dam and allow melt water to drain off the roof normally, as it would if the ice dam were not there.

Jim will be happy to discuss with you all the options for protecting your roof and home during the winter months and will help you find the best solution for your specific situation.
